Why Bottled?: Environment
"why bottled?" was a proposed campaign against bottled water for the 2008-2009 Aspen Design Challenge. "why bottled?:environment" film short is only one aspect of this campaign, focusing on the destructive effects bottled water has on the Earth. I created a simple, yet vibrant, animation of a character who witnesses these effects first hand and then questions why he drank from a bottle in the first place. Intended to be screened on TV and advertised across multiple platforms from small mobile devices to LED sports-stadium screens, it aims to generate public awareness of the water crisis and bottled water as its biggest contributing factor.

"Life, our existence determined by time. We are born with a purpose, a purpose to live, in time. Sometimes we forget that our existence is not limitless. We are hurried and determined only to achieve and earn things and goods, like we are here forever, but sometimes we forget to actually live. Remember, our life is nothing more than the sum of all the decisions we take in time. Don’t wait for the perfect time to do something, there is no such thing. There are only hopes and dreams that we imagine, and is our only duty to make them come true, in our Time. The only time we have!"

The Magical Secrecy Tour: At Teufelsberg
June 5, 2014 – a year after Snowden. 8 hours by bus into the surveillance culture of Berlin, plus whistle-blowing, films and performances. June 5, 2014 marked one year since NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden was introduced to a worldwide public. On this date, transmediale/resource teamed up with N.K. Projekt and Leslie Dunton-Downer, fellow at The American Academy in Berlin, for a programme exploring Berlin as the global capital of informed response and resistance to mass surveillance. The June 5 project interlays the contemporary and the historical to ask what Berlin's surveillance culture can teach us about the actual powers of today's data-hungry states, organisations, and corporations. By addressing this issue, the attempt is to strengthen thriving new alliances in the resistance to covert massive data collection and exploitation. The programme invites the city's current composition of courageous hackers, technology-based artists, radical politicians, lawyers, journalists, and whistleblowers to outline possible creative interceptions for the fifth estate.
In Search of an Oasis
Innovations in digital technology and the global economic crisis have fueled a need for independent reporting through the use of multimedia. In the winter of 2008, four journalists and I embarked on the East Africa Reporting Initiative to the countries of Ethiopia and Kenya. As part of the nonprofit, independent organization The Common Language Project (CLP), we investigated the region's struggle to secure the world's more basic resource - water. In Search of an Oasis tells the story of our motivations, reactions and adaptations to the changing face of journalism, while capturing the inspiration behind a nonprofit approach to storytelling. Oasis highlights some of the challenges and poignant moments we faced, and how we better came to understand the world and ourselves.

Trailer Roma by Mugur Varzariu
In a way I have to be thankful to Sarkozy. If it wasn’t for him it would have probably taken me a lot longer to realize my own destiny. His morally wrong actions to move romas from point A to point B triggered my personal fight to end the roma plight. Noticing a situation is the first step in recognizing and solving a problem. It was there and then in 2010 when I first opened my eyes and saw this heavily challenged ethnic group. The sense of justice followed me since I was a kid. It was there when I defended my buddies as kid, my colleagues, or when I discovered my ability to write. But it truly made sense when I decided to become a documentary photographer. As I already told you, looking at the problem is the first step in solving it. And what better way to look at things than through the lenses of a camera. The camera gives me the ability to look at things without staring. It also helps me hide my emotions, for the things I sometimes see would make even the toughest men cry like babies. And so, for me, becoming a documentary photographer and a social activist are two coinciding moments. Since 2010 I’ve been constantly following roma’s realities trying to give the world a different point of view. While through my images I want to make people look, through my ideas I want people to challenge their own limitations and preconceptions. Being forced evictions (human wrights and procedures violations, the right to adequate housing), ghettoization (segregation), denigratory terminology (rom VS gipsy), traditions (weddings), education (wasted generations), or family (the beauty of having large families), I shine a light on the wrongs and the goods, inspiring change through the power of example. I can no longer impassively watch the bleeding hearts shade a tear for the starving kids in Africa, when we have similar dramas in our own backyard...

Learn fast on the edges of an ecosystem
If you're focused on pragmatic change, the starting point is to find an edge. And that is typically a new market, a new technology, a new business model that has the potential to scale very rapidly, and ultimately actually to become the core of the business. So you start with an edge; rather than trying to convince the core to give you resources on the edge, the primary focus is looking out beyond your institution and say: 'Who could I mobilize to try to engage and drive some change on this edge?' So you're reaching out and getting leverage from beyond the institution, and that becomes a way to avoid the bottleneck of the core, that will resist giving you resources. And then there's the opportunity to really learn faster as you get out on these edges. Take an ecosystem and not just connect to the resources and the skills that are available from people beyond your company, but create relationships where you're all learning faster as a result of connecting around performance challenges and figuring out creative new approaches to the business. And so in that respect you also achieve much more rapid learning and performance improvement.
Domscheit-Berg: WikiLeaks vs OpenLeaks
What WikiLeaks does is it is accepting information from sources and it is publishing that information and it is responsible for everything in between. So there is a lot of work in between receiving something and publishing it again if you want to make sure the source is anonymous. If you have a high work load you need a lot of resources to work on all of that. You have to make a lot of political decisions in between. You have to have standards by which you decide, again, what's private and what's public, or what should be private and what should be public. And these are a lot of questions that are coming up in one organization. And what OpenLeaks does is we're trying to be less than that. We're just focusing on the part that has to protect the source and we're offering that technology to existing organizations. So we're basically a service provider. We're a very specific solution to the question about anonymous sources and how these sources can submit material and still be protected. So in the future, hopefully, you can go to websites like, I don't know, leaks.greenpeace.org and if you know about an environmental scandal you can say, Greenpeace would be the best recipient for this, and you can send it in to them and then you can specify that if they don't want it, you will give it to them exclusively for four weeks, and if they don't act up on it, it should be distributed within the system to all the other partners. And by that dynamic you make sure that first of all you have someone that has exclusive access to information, and this is just how the media economy works, they need a scoop, they want a scoop, and on the other hand you can make sure that if they don't take the scoop, because they're not interested in the material, it still gets distributed to others, so you avoid the whole gate keeping that the media unfortunately is doing.
2014 Technology and Adult Education Conference
On Friday, May 16, 2014, two hundred adult educators from across the region joined field experts to discover innovative strategies to address the needs of adults lacking basic literacy and at The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy’s 26th Annual Technology and Adult Education Conference. The Conference was co-sponsored by Temple University’s Center for Social Policy and Community Development (CSPCD) and held on Temple University’s main campus. This year’s conference aimed to integrate technology into adult education and workforce development programs, thereby increasing the quality of instruction city-wide. Adult learners today require educational opportunities that help fulfill a wide variety of technology, social, educational and workforce goals. The conference theme “Connected Learning in Adult Education” represents shifts in the way practitioners conceptualize teaching and learning in adult education. Nearly twenty workshops focused on practice-based integrations of technology into adult literacy instruction, curriculum design, and programming. Topics included: an introduction to IBM Reading Companion software, extending the classroom community by building a class website, mobile and tablet applications that can bolster classroom instruction, instructional technology for adult basic and adult secondary education, and massive open online courses for college preparation and professional development. The conference featured a presentation on the current state of KEYSPOT, a citywide coalition of community groups led by The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy, The City of Philadelphia’s Office of Innovation and Technology, Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation, and Drexel University, committed to bringing Internet access, training and technology to all Philadelphia communities. The presentation highlighted the city’s dedication to equipping all citizens with the work-ready skills required of today’s technology-based economy by continuing the successful work of KEYSPOT. The afternoon featured lunch and a “Tech Talk” panel with Jeff Carter the Director of Adult Education Initiative at Digital Promise, Dr. Judith Rényi, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy and Cynthia Zafft Senior Advisor for the National College Transition Network and co-director for the LINCS Region 1 Professional Development Center for the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education. The “Tech Talk” explored the use of technology to enhance efforts in serving the needs of low-skilled adults. Panelists discussed the role that technology plays in three areas: (1) developing adult workforce education programs; (2) facilitating professional development for practitioners; and (3) building coalitions. Next, Pearson ELT educational materials and desktop computer donated by Nonprofit Technology Resources were raffled off. Participants visited vendors and exhibitors like IBM, Aztec Software, Technology Learning Collaborative, KEYSPOT, Philadelphia Adult Literacy Alliance and The Free Library of Philadelphia. A special thanks to all that attended and facilitated at the conference. We hope to see you back next year!
Cuddle Up by Kayle Hope
Touch Therapy with Ali C. Tags: cuddle, cuddleunyc, touch, therapy, therapeutic touch, stress-relief Short Description: Ali C is New York City’s first professional cuddler. She runs Cuddle U NYC out of her studio apartment downtown and charges $80 for an hour-long cuddle session. Ali’s cuddles are based on a re-parenting therapy rooted in nurturing touch. Long Description: As technology becomes evermore present in all our lives, People are getting far less face time and human interaction than ever before. Ali C., runs a business out of her apartment where she offers cuddle sessions to New Yorkers. Ali says many people find it strange that someone would go cuddle with a complete stranger, but what they don’t understand is that cuddling is actually rooted in touch therapy and a technique called inner bonding, developed by Dr. Margaret Paul. People always assume that there’s something odd about touching someone you don’t know, but in reality the cuddle is completely nonsexual. Ali even has a screening process where she looks at the client’s online profiles and talks to them on the phone before ever letting them come over for the cuddle. She does this to weed out an potential clients who might have those kinds of sexual intentions. There are a number of reasons why someone would sign up for a cuddle session. They may be going through a breakup, lost a loved one, or just going through a stressful time in their life. The client in this film, Rachel, is a friend of mine who had recently gone through a breakup and was interested in having a cuddle session. Ali says her work stems from a long history of feeling like she was able to nurture people well. As a teenager, Ali volunteered in a convalescent home where she would spend time with people who were wheel-chair bound or had Huntington’s or Parkinson’s disease. Ali worked in web design and social media marketing before she founded her snuggle business four months ago. So far Ali has had more than 40 cuddle sessions, and people keep coming back for more.
The Next Big Thing with Clive Mayhew
Timing is everything. So what time is it now? Clive Mayhew was this month’s Lunchtime Learning guest speaker who opened his session at Alive’s campus on “The Next Big Thing” by saying: “20 years ago Cisco told me many of the same things that I’ll be telling you here today. But this time it’s different’. Now the timing is right” As a man who knows a lot about the good fortune of timing, Clive led the first browser battle of the 1990’s at the helm of Netscape during their market inception and domination. So what has changed this time around to make the fantasies of decades past, a commercial and social reality? It all comes down to the convergence of technology, Clive states. Now more than ever, the network of connected people, devices and ideas is at a tipping point and is ripe for mainstream change. The three ripest sectors There are countless industries which are taking advantage of the modern, connected world but according to Clive, the biggest disruption will come from within: 1. Preventative Health With an ageing and widening global population, we can’t afford not to invest in the future of our citizens or there will be more people in care than there will be able to provide treatment. Speaking from personal experience, Clive described what our unsustainable lifestyle cost him personally and professionally. 2. Crowdfunding “When we needed the banks most, they turned their backs on us” Clive stated with conviction. He believes that the exponential growth of crowdfunding as well as the emerging crowd-lending services available will soon outweigh the traditional banking and government sectors who a holding their purse strings tight. 3. Software as a Service As we watched Clive’s cleaner rake leaves from the lawn of his investment property up north from his Dropcam’s LIVE stream, Clive told us his views on how the devices making up the internet of things is driving the opportunities for cloud computing and software as a service. This area, he believes has been the most hyped (for over 20 years) however, in his opinion, is the most ripe. Who cares about the next biggest thing? Throughout Clive’s engaging presentation he made a point not to approach this topic as an investor or even an agency like Alive who will be designing the solutions made possible by what he was discussing. Instead, he carved the room into three groups representing self, organisation & society and stimulated the discussion from the users’ perspective and what all this will mean for the world. Clive believes we are all affected by the next big thing and this is a truly exciting time where we will all see major shifts in the quality of lives we are able to lead. The highlight video of Clive’s discussion can be viewed HERE and if you would like to attend the next Lunchtime Learning session at the Alive campus, please email your expression of interest to email@example.com
